A Contemporary Peace
By Debra Bruch
(The actor has a trumpet. He hides behind the
podium. He blows the trumpet. He travels to a proscenium and blows the
trumpet.)
Can you hear it?
The sound of war, avarice, and greed. The sound
of sorrow and despair.
But there's another sound! (Blows the trumpet.)
In the beginning, the earth was without form and
void. And there was God. (Blows the trumpet.)
And God made the light and the dark. (Blows
the trumpet.)
And God made heaven and earth. (Blows the trumpet.)
And God made the sea and the land. (Blows the
trumpet.)
And God made grass and trees and flowers. (Blows
the trumpet.)
And God made fish and birds and lions and lambs.
(Blows the trumpet.)
And then God made people.
(The actor mimes taking an apple from the tree,
looking around, eats it, sees God, and points to a woman audience member.)
"She made me do it!"
Adam fell that we may be. And we are that we might
have joy.
I think that's why Jesus is called the Prince
of Peace. Because he is creation and light. Because he gives us joy.
(Blows the trumpet.)
Listen to it! The trumpet is still sounding.
The trumpet still sounds.
