The Pawn Shop

by Debra Bruch

(This is in two parts. One part should be near the beginning of the worship service and the second part near the end.)

The Pawn Shop #1

5 people:

  • Person #1
  • Person #2
  • The Pawnbroker
  • Two people standing upstage

Needed:

  • A card as a receipt.

Two people are standing upstage, facing the audience. They don't say anything. Person #1 enters, dragging in Person #2. Person #1 knocks on an imaginary door. The Pawnbroker enters and opens the door. Person #1 says, "Is this the pawn shop?" The Pawnbroker replies, "Yes, it is." Person #1 then wants to give him Person #2. The Pawnbroker agrees, takes Person #2, and places him or her by the others upstage. The Pawnbroker then writes out a receipt and gives it to Person #1. Person #1 then leaves.

The Pawn Shop #2

Three people are standing upstage facing the audience. Person #1 enters and knocks on an imaginary door. The Pawnbroker enters and opens the door. Person #1 asks, "Is this the pawn shop?" The Pawnbroker says yes. Person #1 gives the Pawnbroker a receipt and tells him that he wants to redeem Person #2. The Pawnbroker then takes Person #2 and gives him or her to Person #1. Person #1 and Person #2 then leave.
