A Peace Portrait
by Debra Bruch
Hello! I am a storyteller and I want to tell you a story. But I don't want to tell you just ANY story. This story just may be true!
Once upon a time, somebody did something wrong to me. Now, that wrong was SO bad that it was all I could think about. Day after day after day after day I thought about it. I felt a sword inside of me. My heart was heavy with it. I just had to do something about it. And so I decided to go out and seek --- VENGEANCE!
I MUST JUSTIFY MY LIFE!
And so I began my journey of vengeance.
I was gonna get him! Justice is the word! There must be justice in the world.
But while I was traveling this road, I ran into a little child. He pulled on my coat.
"What do you want?!"
"I'm hungry."
"I'm too busy. I must justify my life."
"But I'm hungry."
"All right. Here's something to eat. Now leave me alone. I'm busy."
And so I left the child and continued on my road. But it wasn't very long until I ran into the child again. Boy, was I surprised!
"I'm hungry."
"How can you be hungry? I just fed you!"
"But I'm hungry."
"Well, what are you hungry for?"
"Love."
"Love? Oh, okay. Here's a hug. Now I've given you love so leave me alone. I'm behind schedule."
So I left the child and continued on my road.
But then I turned the bend, and what did I see?! Yep, you guessed it! The child!
"I'm hungry."
"Again?"
"I'm hungry."
"Well what are you hungry for this time?"
"Peace."
"Peace? You're hungry for peace? I can't."
"Why?"
"I have to seek vengeance."
"Why?"
"I have to justify my life."
"But who will justify mine?"
(Pause.)
"I will justify your life. But who will justify mine?"
"Jesus."
"Jesus?"
"Yeah! When other people can't really help you, then Jesus will. I think that's why Jesus is called the Prince of Peace. Because he justifies a person's life!"
At that very moment, I felt the sword taken out of my heart. I looked at it. I looked at my own hate and my own anger. Then I turned to the child.
"What'll I do with this?"
"Give it to Jesus."
"Well that doesn't seem fair. If I give it to Jesus, then he'll have it!"
"No, you got it all wrong! Jesus doesn't keep it! He throws it into a big pit. He knows what to do with that stuff."
So I gave it to Jesus.
At that moment, my heart was filled with peace.
And I was standing on another road.
I took the child's hand and together we walked the road of peace.
Come with us.
